Current Projects
Upper Passumpsic Watershed Flood Mitigation Project Development
The East and West Branch Passumpsic and Miller's Run Rivers drain into the Passumpsic main stem in the town of Lyndon, and area prone to problem flooding. With funding from the VT Department of Environmental Conservation's Ecosystem Restoration Grants, Caledonia County NRCD is working with Lyndon, Burke and other towns to develop projects that will help restore equilibrium on tributaries and mitigate flooding in the town of Lyndon.
Burke Trees for Streams
With a grant from the Vermont Watershed Grants, funded by Vermont conservation license plates, the Conservation District and the Burke Conservation Commission will be planting buffers along streams and rivers in the town of Burke, with the help of school groups and volunteers.
Passumpsic Watershed Culvert Inventory
Using the Agency of Natural Resources Bridge and Culvert Inventory protocol, over 450 culverts were inventoried in the Passumpsic Watershed by teams from Lyndon State College with a grant from the Upper Connecticut Mitigation and Enhancement Fund. The inventory will provide detailed information about aquatic organism passage and help organize and prioritize culvert improvements regionally.
Hardwick Stormwater Remediation
With a grant from the Ecosystem Restoration program, Caledonia County NRCD is working with the town of Hardwick to develop stormwater treatment projects.
Reconnecting the Upper Lamoille: Aquatic Organism Passage Improvement
With a grant from the Vermont Community Foundation's Lake Champlain and Tributaries Restoration Fund, four culverts will be selected that are impeding fish passage to develop final engineering and designs for replacement or retrofit.
Trees for Streams
Trees for Stream is coordinated among five Conservation Districts in the Lamoille Watershed to install river buffers along the Lamoille River and its tributaries. This program is voluntary and low cost for landowners, and in its 10th year, has worked with over 100 landowners and become a model buffer program for other parts of the state.
Stevens Watershed Phase 2 Stream Geomorphic Assessment
The Stevens watershed in the towns of Barnet, Peacham, Danville and Ryegate, will have updated and completed stream geomorphic assessments in 2011. Project partners Redstart Consulting, Inc. will be developing a corridor plan for the Stevens River, Peacham Hollow Brook and South Peacham Brook that will become an important planning tool for river management in the region. The project was funded by VT DEC's Ecosystem Restoration Grants.
